A practical buying guide to the Hirano Designs Lucky Cat MXV Astro Panel Set: compatibility, finish, price value, and who should skip it.
Quick answer
Buy the Hirano Designs Lucky Cat MXV Astro Panel Set only if you own a Mission XV Astro Boro Box Mod and want a limited-edition Japanese-inspired look with a Maneki Neko firing button. If you use a different device or prefer a plain finish, skip it.
Compatibility is binary: Astro or nothing
The set is made specifically for the Mission XV Astro Boro Box Mod. It is not a universal panel kit, so it will not fit other boro mods or pod systems even if they look similar. Check your device name before ordering.
What the dual anodized finish changes day to day
The aluminum alloy panels use deep engraving and a dual anodized finish. That means the pattern is cut into the metal rather than printed on top, so it should resist fading better than a decal. The trade-off is that anodized aluminum can still scratch or chip at hard edges, and the deep engraving gives dirt and pocket lint more places to settle. Plan to wipe the panels with a soft cloth rather than scrub them.
Limited edition means buy now or hunt later
Hirano Designs positions this as a limited edition panel set. If the Koji-tsunagi pattern and lucky cat button appeal to you, waiting risks missing the run. If you are unsure about the style, do not buy just because it is limited; a custom panel you do not love is still a custom panel you will not use.
Price versus a plain replacement
At USD 25.00 against a USD 49.99 comparison price, the set costs more than a basic stock replacement panel would. You are paying for the engraved design, the matching firing button, and the limited run, not for better performance. If your only goal is to replace a damaged panel, a plain option may be the smarter spend.
Decision rules for buying custom MXV panels
- Confirm your mod first: Look at the device name on your mod or its box. If it does not say Mission XV Astro Boro Box Mod, do not buy this set. Compatibility is the one rule you cannot work around.
- Decide if the design fits your daily carry: The Koji-tsunagi pattern and lucky cat button are bold and decorative. If you want a stealthy or understated setup, this is the wrong panel set.
- Weigh limited-edition urgency against your budget: If you like the design and the USD 25.00 price fits your accessory budget, buy it while it is available. If you are only curious, wait; limited runs are not a reason to stretch your budget.
- Plan for care before you install: Keep a soft microfiber cloth handy. Wipe the engraved panels dry; avoid abrasive polishes that can dull the anodized finish.
